How to write a driver CV

An effective driver CV shows you’re qualified, safe, and reliable — whether you’re behind the wheel of a van, train, taxi, or bus. Here’s how to write a great CV for a driver job:

Skip the writer’s block and make a CV in minutes with our AI software.

1. Display your driving licence prominently

Checking that your driving licence is on your CV is one of the first things employers will do — it belongs near the top, so you can put it next to your contact details.

Include the type of driving licence you hold (for example, Category B for van drivers, Category D for bus drivers, or a local authority taxi licence) and mention if you have a clean driving record — or any endorsements.

2. Include all other driver qualifications for your type of driving

Make sure to list any additional qualifications specific to your driving role so that employers know they can hire you without any further training. For example:

  • Van drivers: Driver CPC, manual handling training
  • Train drivers: Train driving licence, operator rules training, psychometric tests passed
  • Taxi drivers: Local authority taxi licence, enhanced DBS check, local area knowledge (such as The Knowledge for London)
  • Bus drivers: Category D licence, CPC, first aid or customer service training

3. List driving skills from the job advert

Tailor your skills section on your CV to match the job advert. Doing this shows employers you wrote your CV specially to target their opening so they’ll be more likely to want to interview you since you’ve shown enthusiasm. Here are some skills to list:

  • Road safety and traffic law knowledge
  • Route planning and navigation
  • Time management and punctuality
  • Passenger safety and comfort (especially for taxis and buses)
  • Customer service and communication
  • Vehicle inspection and basic maintenance
  • The Highway Code
  • Defensive driving

4. Add numbers that highlight your achievements

Make your work experience stand out by adding measurable results to your bullet points. You could talk about time savings, passenger ratings, fuel cost savings, or how many people you’ve trained. Here are 10 examples to show you what we mean:

  • Maintained a 99% on-time record across over 200 weekly local bus routes in Tyne & Wear
  • Achieved a 4.9-star passenger rating over 3,000+ Uber journeys in Inner London
  • Safely transported more than 20,000 passengers annually on regional rail routes in the South East
  • Reduced fuel costs by 15% through efficient driving practices on long-distance runs across the M1 corridor
  • Completed 1,500+ patient transport journeys with zero safety incidents across NHS ambulance services
  • Navigated high-traffic London congestion zones with 98% on-time taxi pick-ups during peak hours
  • Carried out daily vehicle safety checks in line with DVSA guidelines, maintaining a 100% compliance record
  • Delivered 99.5% customer satisfaction scores on Transport for London bus routes over 2 years
  • Trained and mentored 10+ new PCV licence holders to improve safety and service across regional bus services
  • Achieved a 10% reduction in journey times on rural routes by optimising navigation through local A-roads and B-roads

5. Sum up your driver CV with a personal profile

Last, write a CV personal profile at the top of the page that ties everything together. Here, you ought to mention your years of experience, top strengths, and commitment to safety and customer service. Here are several examples for different types of driver:
