How to write a data scientist cover letter

Before you begin writing, make sure you know how to write a cover letter in a way that makes you seem like the best candidate for the job.

Your data science CV and technical skills might be the most important parts of your job application, but writing a strong cover letter is essential for bringing those static elements to life.

In my experience as a CV and cover letter expert, the best cover letters in tech give context to the applicant’s skills and show employers how they plan to apply those skills if hired for the job.

Here are six tips to help you write a standout cover letter:

1. Personalise your motivation

The core purpose of your cover letter is to give some flavour to your data science CV. It should tell the employer about who you are and what drives you.

That’s why I find that the best examples of cover letters are those where the applicant presents a clear motivation statement.

Your motivation statement is the reason you’re applying for that one specific data science role and not just any employer that will have you — even if that is the case!

I’m eager to use my expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, and stakeholder engagement to support your mission of delivering a ‘Customer-First’ ethos.

In this example, the applicant has tailored their motivation statement by highlighting specific skill areas in the job description.

By giving themselves the mission of bringing their expertise to the hiring team, they show the employer, ‘Yes, I understand your needs, and I have the right professional skills to address them.’

This kind of detail is what helps you build an emotional connection with the reader and makes your application memorable.

2. Show the impact of your problem-solving skills

Not everyone who reviews your application will have a technical background — but everyone understands the results. Especially the higher-level managers who will make the final decision on whether to make that job offer or not.

That’s why I believe it’s so crucial to emphasise the impact of your skills and achievements when you apply for a job.

Using predictive modelling, I developed a customer-order forecasting tool that enabled targeted inventory adjustments, leading to a 75% sales increase.

This example gets what I’m talking about spot on. Not everyone understands predictive modelling, but everyone can appreciate a nice bump in sales revenue. I might even recommend going one step further and specifying how much money the total sales amounted to — managers always care about the bottom line.

3. Highlight collaboration skills

One of the most overlooked aspects of data science is the ability to work well with others. While technical abilities are essential, companies want to see that you know how to communicate findings and expectations with various members of your team — some of whom may have little to no understanding of the data skills you’ve been applying.

I’ve refined data extraction processes to save valuable time while mentoring interns to enhance team capabilities.

The example cover letter’s brief mention of mentorship experience is an immediate green flag. It tells me that the applicant has experience working with stakeholders that do not have the same level of technical proficiency, which is important for the smooth operation of any good team.
