How to write your assistant accountant CV

Assistant accountants support the accounting team with both administrative and accounting tasks, including managing bookkeeping, preparing financial reports, and interacting with clients.

As entry-level employees, many assistant accountants work while they obtain their accounting degrees or qualifications. While employers won’t expect you to have extensive accounting experience, you should demonstrate a basic foundation in accounting principles and competent maths skills on your CV.

Follow our three tips to write an interview-winning CV for an assistant accountant job:

1. Grab the recruiter’s attention with your personal statement

Recruiters receive many applications for a single assistant accountant position. So you should create a compelling personal statement at the top of your CV to distinguish yourself from other candidates.

Make your assistant accountant CV stand out by summarising your qualifications that directly address the job advert in your personal statement. You can tailor your statement by answering questions like the ones below:

  • Do the job duties fall under administration or highly technical accounting?
  • What is the company’s business? Is there any industry-specific knowledge that would be helpful to have?
  • How much will the job require you to interact with clients and customers?

Once you’ve decided what information is most likely to get the recruiter interested in you, introduce yourself in 3–4 sentences. Here’s an example of a well-written personal statement for an assistant accountant CV:

Use keywords from the advert to help your CV pass applicant tracking systems (ATS).

The target position requires developed accounting skills, so the applicant lists their experience with specific accounting tasks such as VAT returns. Additionally, as this company works in real estate, the candidate mentions their familiarity in the industry. Finally, the candidate indicates they’ll bring their ‘communication skills’ to the company, suggesting that interacting with clients and other team members is common in this position.

2. Properly list your certifications

At a minimum, employers require assistant accountant candidates to have completed their A-levels and to have obtained a qualification.

Certifications from the below granting bodies are the most common requirements in job adverts:

You can mention your certifications in your personal statement as well as in more detail in your CV’s certifications section. In your certification section, provide the qualification name, certifying body, and date obtained (or write ‘In Progress’).
