You put the date on a cover letter two lines below your contact information on the right side of the page, per UK business letter formatting. Here’s an example that shows where to put the date when you write a cover letter:

Remember that if you write your cover letter in the body of an email, you don’t need to add the date or header contact information because those details are built into email formatting.
