On the envelope of your CV, you should write the recipient’s address as well as your own.
Instead of writing the addresses directly onto the envelope, you should print them out on adhesive shipping labels and stick them to the envelope. Printing postal addresses makes your envelope look more professional than writing the addresses by hand.
Here’s how to format your address:
- Your Name
- No. Street
- City
- Post Code
And here’s how to format the contact person’s address:
- Contact Person’s Name
- Company Name
- No. Street
- City
- Post Code
Preparing your CV envelope
You should send your CV in a C4 envelope (229 x 234 mm, or 9 x 12 inches). C4 envelopes are designed to fit unfolded A4 paper, which is the standard size for CVs in the UK.
Turn your CV envelope on its side, so the envelope’s opening is facing to the right.
Insert your CV so that the header is the first thing the employer sees when they pull it out of the envelope.
Next, place your address in the upper left-hand corner of the envelope and the contact person’s address in the centre of the envelope.
Finally, put the correct postage stamps in the upper right-hand corner of the envelope. You can take the envelope to your local post office to check how many stamps you should attach.
