Here’s how to write a ‘2 1’ degree on a CV. The applicant has written out their ‘2 1’ degree in words:
EDUCATION
Lancaster University | 2018 – 2021
BA (Hons) Business Management
Second-class honours (upper division)
Spelling out your degree classification is wise if you have too much white space on your CV. However, remember to include ‘(upper division)’ to distinguish your ‘2 1’ from a ‘2 2’.
If your CV looks crowded, write your ‘2 1’ in numbers. Consider using Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, or a combination of the two.
Here are two-degree entries that express ‘2 1’ using Arabic numerals. Note that separating the digits with a decimal point (.) or a colon (:) are both acceptable:
St Andrews University | 2019 – 2022
BSc (Hons) Computer Science, 2.1
London South Bank University | 2018 – 2021
BA (Hons) Architecture, 2:1
Because your degree classification is much shorter when you write it in numbers, include it on the same line as your degree type and course name. Formatting your entry in this way saves space and is more pleasing to look at.
To list your ‘2 1’ using Roman numerals or combined Roman and Arabic numerals, use a decimal to separate the digits:
Swansea University | 2019 – 2023
BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies, II.i
Nottingham Trent University | 2017 – 2020
BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering, 2.i
As with any other degree classification, include your ‘2 1’ with your degree type, course name, institution name, and the dates you studied.
Your ‘2 1’ should appear last in your education entry, but before any optional information you choose to include about your degree (e.g., coursework, your dissertation title, or awards).
